February 2014

Wichita Weavers, Spinners & Dyers Guild Posted on January 26, 2014 by webadminFebruary 5, 2014

The Feb 1st Guild meeting will be at WSU.  It starts at 10:00 am, but come at 9:30 for our social half hour.

We will be doing continuous strand weaving.  This is done on a square loom or a triangle loom or even a rectangle loom.  We are going to be learning on either the square loom or the triangle loom.  In this type of weaving, you don’t warp and then weave the weft – it is done all at the same time.  That makes it wonderful for handspun yarn because there is very little waste.

  • If you have a continuous strand loom, feel free to bring it.  If not, I will have some square looms for sale, $15 each.
  • You also need to bring some yarn in a medium or bulky weight (Worsted, Afghan, Aran or Chunky).  I wouldn’t bring yarn that doesn’t stretch, like cotton or silk unless it is blended with wool and does have some stretch to it.  You can make plaids with the looms, but for your first try, variegated yarns are really easy and look wonderful and of course a solid color is always an option.
  • Bring a crochet hook (to fit the size of your yarn) or a locker hook.
  • You may want to bring a tapestry beater or a hair pick, but this is just a nice to have item.

A good website for continuous strand weaving is Hillcreek Fiber Studio.

Location: McKnight Hall, room 118
Date: Saturday, February 1, 2014
Time: Social at 9:30 a.m., meeting 10:00 – noon

Directions to McKnight Hall: Exit off of Hillside onto Alumni Drive. The McKnight building will be on your right. Enter the north wing (around the curve of the street) through the brown double doors that face Hillside. Parking is available in the lot across the street from the McKnight Building.

January 2014

Wichita Weavers, Spinners & Dyers Guild Posted on January 3, 2014 by webadminJanuary 3, 2014

The next meeting (January 4, 2014) will be at WSU starting at 10:00 am with social half hour starting at 9:30 am.  Please see below for what to bring and what to do before the workshop.  The guild will be picking up the expenses and Paula is donating her time and knowledge!  I am sure you are as excited about this workshop as I am!  Hope to see you there!

Nancy Mercer, Guild President

PLEASE, IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THESE THINGS, BRING THEM WITH YOU!

I have some of everything but not enough if we have a big group.

  • Lid from plastic tub ( big enough to put patterns for both feet)
  • At least 2 towels that are big enough to fit over the lid
  • Pan or insulated bottle, thermos
  • Hot plate for heating water, electric tea kettle
  • Cardboard to make pattern for both feet
  • Tulle fabric or nylon mesh ( I have used all different kinds)   This just needs to be porous…
  • Rubber shelf liner/non-skid mat (optional but nice)
  • Ladle or turkey-baster
  • Bubble wrap if you have some.  I do some…
  • Stretching ties like nylon strips of pantyhose
  • Pool noodle, hose, wooden roller bar, old sweeper hose or parts…
  • Heavy gloves (I will bring a box)
  • If you have something you would like to use for embellishing

I will bring lots of colored wool for your picking.  You will need .50 to .70 oz for top of slipper.

I WILL BRING EVERYONE ABOUT 4OZS OF ICELANDIC WOOL FOR 3 LAYERS BOTTOM AND 2 LAYERS FOR TOP.  LAST TOP LAYER IS THE EMBELLISHING.

***SEE THIS DOCUMENT FOR HOW TO HAVE YOUR FOOT PATTERN DONE BEFORE THE WORKSHOP.  THIS WILL SAVE US SOME TIME. WE WILL MAKE THE CARDBOARD RESIST AFTER YOU PICK OUT WHICH WOOL.

I have found that even the same breeds can need different allowances.
