Are you wanting to learn how to spin your own yarns for knitting, crochet, weaving or other fiber crafts? Do you want to learn how to use a spinning wheel but are intimidated by it or don’t know where to start? Then this class is for you!
In this course, you will learn the basics of wheel spinning, including understanding how a spinning wheel works, how to spin and ply on a wheel, and how to finish a skein of yarn for use in your fiber projects.
In the first class session we will cover different kinds of spinning wheels, the parts of a wheel and what they do, how to draft out spinning fiber and add twist to make singles yarn, and troubleshooting common problems. Students will then spin two bobbins of yarn (with beginner-friendly fiber provided by the instructor) that they will use for the second class session. This may include work outside class to complete.
In the second class, students will learn to ply the yarn they spun to make a 2-ply yarn, and will learn how to finish the yarn so that it’s ready for wherever their creative inspiration takes them!
Space is limited; recommended for ages 16 and older.
A very limited number of wheels are available to borrow, but must be requested at registration! There is no charge to borrow a wheel for the duration of the class, but students will be responsible for any damages or late returns.
Class will be held on two Saturdays – February 10 and 17, 2024 from 12:30 – 4:30 pm.
